Donald Trump, Criminal Records and the US Canada Border

Now that Donald Trump has won the presidency people might be wondering how this will affect Canadians, specifically in relation to crossing the border. In truth though, I doubt much will change at all.

Certainly the Canadian-American border is not the first thing on the minds of Americans. They are far more likely to focus their attention on their other border, the one that Donald Trump would like to build a wall across. As for the likelihood of that wall getting built your guess is just as good as mine. Very recently I would’ve said its more likely America will build a space elevator but now I’m not so sure. Maybe a wall is, indeed, going up.

The one rumour circulating about our border refers to the entry fee for US entry waivers which may go up significantly. But it seems to me it is completely separate from presidential politics and this election cycle. I also doubt Donald Trump is even aware of what a US entry waiver is, let alone how much it costs to file one with the American government.

For the record the current fee to submit your Waiver application to the Americans is $585 USD. But rumours are circulating that suggest it could go up to as much as $900 or more.

So if you have plans to travel to the United States and you require a US entry waiver to do so, don’t panic just yet. It is highly unlikely that President Trump will have any impact at all on the process of Canadians overcoming a US border restriction.

Of course, when it comes to Donald Trump and the US politics I’ve been wrong before. Very wrong!
