Suspended Sentence
This is a type of sentence involving probation. When someone is given a suspended sentence it means that they are placed on probation for up to three years. If the person maintains good behaviour and does not violate the terms of their probation, the sentence will be complete when their probation is finished and they will normally be able to apply for a Record Suspension following a five-year waiting period. However, if the person doesn’t maintain good behaviour and gets into trouble with the law before their probation is finished, they can be charged with violating their probation order, which is a criminal offence. Additionally they can be brought back before the courts and have an additional sentence handed down for the original offence.
